Cerebrospinal fluid formation and absorption in dehydrated sheep.

چکیده
Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) plays an important role in the brain's adaptive response to acute osmotic disturbances. In the present experiments, the effect of 48-h dehydration on CSF formation and absorption rates was studied in conscious adult sheep. Animals had cannulas chronically implanted into the lateral cerebral ventricles and cisterna magna to enable the ventriculocisternal perfusion. A 48-h water deprivation altered neither CSF production nor resistance to CSF absorption. However, in the water-depleted sheep, intraventricular pressure tended to be lower than that found under control conditions. This likely resulted from decreased extracellular fluid volume and a subsequent drop in central venous pressure occurring in dehydrated animals. In conclusion, our findings provide evidence for the maintenance of CSF production during mild dehydration, which may play a role in the regulation of fluid balance in the brain during chronic hyperosmotic stress.

An Investigation into the CSF Absorption in Cats
Objective Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF), its secretion, circulation and absorption have been the subject of recent researches. There is a general agreement that the main site of CSF secretion is in the choroids plexus. However, the main absorption site is controversial. Some believe that arachnoid granulations are the principle sites of CSF absorption. In this study, different locations of CSF abs...

We estimated the volumetric clearance of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) through arachnoid villi and extracranial lymphatics in conscious sheep. Catheters were inserted into both lateral ventricles, the cisterna magna, multiple cervical lymphatics, thoracic duct, and jugular vein. Uncannulated cervical vessels were ligated.125I-labeled human serum albumin (HSA) was administered into both lateral vent...
متن کاملLevel of nutrition affects leptin concentrations in plasma and cerebrospinal fluid in sheep.
In mature male sheep, the level of nutrition acutely influences the secretion of reproductive hormones. The mechanism involved is not fully understood but findings in humans and laboratory rodents would suggest a major role for leptin that is secreted from adipose tissue and then travels via the circulation to the central nervous system. Before we can begin to test this hypothesis, we need to b...

Enterobius vermicularis is a nematod of large intestine in man. Extra intestinal localization of this parasite is rare. A 60 year old man was admitted to the hospital with the clinical manifestation of meningitis. In laboratory examination of cerebrospinal fluid (C.S.F), the appearance was red, Albu-min level was high and the glucose showed normal value. Haematoxylin and Eosin stained slides pr...

Upregulation of certain growth factors in the central nervous system can alter brain fluid dynamics. Hydrocephalus was produced in adult Sprague-Dawley rats by infusing recombinant basic fibroblast growth factor (FGF-2) at 1 microg/day into a lateral ventricle for 2, 3, 5, or 10-12 days. Lateral and third ventricular enlargement progressively increased from 2 to 10 days. Ventriculomegaly was al...
